Why this event?
This is the most epic swim on the Sydney ocean calendar.
The South Head Roughwater is the crown jewel of Sydney’s ocean swim season. At 10km, it’s the most challenging and prestigious swim on the circuit, tracing the coastline from the famous Bondi Beach, around the cliffs of South Head, and into Watsons Bay.
For experienced ocean swimmers, this is your marathon. A test of endurance, navigation, and mental grit, rewarded by panoramic views, strong currents, and an iconic finish inside the harbour. The swim runs with the swell, making it as scenic as it is strategic.
This is the swim you train for. This is the swim you remember.
What's on offer
10km Ocean Swim - South Head Roughwater
This is the kind of swim that ocean dreams are made of. Starting on the sand at North Bondi, you’ll head straight out to Ben Buckler – via the shark buoy – round the iconic headland, and follow the cliffs north along Sydney’s rugged and jaw-droppingly beautiful coastline. After soaking up the open ocean, you’ll enter the calm embrace of Sydney Harbour, gliding past Camp Cove, then veering left into Watsons Bay, where the finish line awaits in front of the Vaucluse Yacht Club (just 200m south of the Watsons Bay Hotel). It’s a true journey swim, 10km of caves, cliffs, currents and crystal-blue views. Most swimmers finish between 2–4 hours, and while it’s solo in the water, having an escort paddler is optional but highly recommended (think of them as your oceanside kick). If you’re looking to level up and tick off one of Sydney’s most spectacular long-distance swims, this is your stretch of sea.
