Rescue Water Craft Operator Course

The SLSA Rescue Water Craft (RWC) Operator award and its aligned units of competencies provides members with skills and knowledge to effectively drive and manage a RWC in search and rescue operations and as part of a water safety team.
Members who hold this SLSNSW State and Branch delivered award may patrol and support operations in the role of an RWC Operator. Proficiency in this award is renewed each year through SLS Skills Maintenance.
Expressions of Interest are now being sought from experienced members who are interested in joining the Rescue Services RWC (Support Ski) team for SLSS's next course intake of Trainees.
Certification:
Upon successful completion, members also qualify for the nationally recognised PUAEQ001 Prepare, maintain and test response equipment and PUASAR016 Operate and maintain a personal watercraft for rescue operations units of competency.
SLSNSW Entry Requirements:
- Financial Member of Tamarama SLSC
- Minimum age of 18 years for assessment
- Minimum age of 17 years to commence training
- Current SLSA Bronze Medallion and Certificate II Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)
- Hold a current and valid driver’s licence with towing capacity (minimum green Ps)
Note:
- SLS RWC Operators in NSW are required to complete the SLSNSW Rescue Services Member Application Form, (which will be provided upon completion of the course)
- After completing the RWC Operator Course, SLS members in NSW are required to go through a Probationary RWC Operator period as per the latest SLSNSW Rescue Services Member Appointment Procedure.
Course duration:
A minimum of 15-20 hours*. This is made up of 1-4+ hour sessions covering 5 topics that include several different RWC operator techniques.
Note:
This course also includes completing a pre-course workbook/theory assessment to ensure that you meet the NSW marine licencing requirements during training. This allows you to drive an RWC for Surf Life Saving activities only and is an exemption agreement between SLSNSW and NSW Maritime.

Advanced Resuscitation & Oxygen Therapy Course
Tamarama SLSC's Advanced Resuscitation & Oxygen Therapy Courses are facilitated by the Surf Lifesaving Academy.
Course Content
- Recognise an emergency situation and convey details of the incident to emergency services
- Assess the casualty and develop a management plan
- Check resuscitation equipment including defibrillation equipment
- Maintain an airway by: Using suction and oropharyngeal airways (OP airways)
- Resuscitate a casualty using two person techniques using oxygen equipment and defibrillator
- Use oxygen to provide therapy
- Recover and restore oxygen equipment
- Manage life threatening bleeding the application of tourniquets and haemostatic dressings
- Recover and restore defibrillation equipment
- Contribute to workplace reporting of an incident and psychological impacts on self and others
Duration
The duration of the course is approximately 8 hours (Plus pre-course learning to be completed by all full course participants prior to the training day).
Entry Requirements
Participants must be a minimum of 15 years of age on the date of final assessment. Participants must hold Provide First Aid (HLTAID011) units of competency
Assessment
This course is assessed through demonstration, presentation and application of all elements of competency in the workplace. Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios.
Please note, it is a requirement of this course that practical demonstration of CPR must be performed on the floor.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive the SLSA Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate and a nationally recognised statement of attainment for the following units of competency:
- HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- HLTAID015 - Provide advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy

2026 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships
The 2026 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships will be held on the Gold Coast, Queensland at North Kirra SLSC and Tugun SLSC from 21 – 29 March.
The Aussies is an annual event where members from Australia’s 315 Surf Clubs come together to compete in more than 480 beach and ocean events. It is the largest event of its kind, only comparing the likes of the Commonwealth Games.

Tamarama SLSC Club Championships
We will run both Beach and Water events including Beach Sprints, Beach Flags, Swim Race, Board Race and finish with the Gentle Ironperson event for those brave enough.
This is the last event for the season. Who will reign supreme? Don't miss the chance to be crowned Tamarama SLSC Club Champion.

SMAR - Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue Course

The SLSA Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue provides members with skills and knowledge to participate in search and rescue (SAR) operations during a search and rescue incident.
This includes knowledge and skills related to the different stages of a Search and Rescue incident, the Australasian Inter-agency Incident Management System (AIIMS), SMEAC plans, creating search areas, police-handover and advanced water-entry techniques.
Certification:
Upon successful completion, members receive the SLSA Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue. Proficiency in this award is renewed each year through SLS Skills Maintenance.
Entry Requirements:
- Financial Member of Tamarama SLSC
- Minimum Age of 16 years
- Complete an unaided swim of 400m in 8 minutes or less (goggles and masks permitted) in a swimming pool of not less than 25m, or over a measured open water course which will be observed before participating in any aquatic training.
Course duration:
3-session course. Dates are as follows:
- Tuesday 10th of March 2026 - Theory - Branch Office - 6:30pm-9:30pm
- Thursday 12th of March 2026 - Theory - Branch Office - 6.30pm-9:30pm
- Saturday 14th of March 2026 - Practical - TBA
SMPC - Silver Medallion Patrol Captain Course
The SLS Silver Medallion Patrol Captain award provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to confidently manage a beach and patrol as a Surf Life Saving Patrol Captain.
Members who hold this award may patrol in the role of a Patrol Captain. Proficiency in this award is renewed each year through SLS Skills Maintenance.
Entry Requirements:
- Financial Member of Tamarama SLSC
- Minimum Age of 17 years
- hold an SLSA Bronze Medallion or have held an SLSA Bronze Medallion and currently hold a patrolling award
- Have a minimum of 2 years patrolling experience
Course Duration:
3-session course plus self-paced learning and the completion of an on-the-job component.
Dates for this course are as follows:
