Mental health support for Tama clubbies

A day on the beach connecting with nature is a great way to help improve mental health. But for volunteer surf lifesavers it can also be stressful and may impact on our mental wellbeing. That’s why there are a range of initiatives to support the mental health of Tamarama SLSC clubbies.

First, let me introduce myself. I’m Lu-Lu and I am the Member Protection and Wellbeing Officer at Tamarama SLSC. It is my job to ensure we are keeping our members safe, we are meeting our legislative requirements and we are promoting good mental health and wellbeing in the club.

I regularly promote mental health and wellbeing ideas and suggestions to our members but given today is World Mental Health Day 2024 I wanted to recap on the main channels our volunteers can access mental health support.

Firstly, all Surf Life Saving NSW members have access to a member assistance program that is free, confidential and available 24/7/365. Appointments can be virtual or in person and this season it is even easier to access with no referral necessary.

A second option is the National Emergency Worker Support Service (NEWSS) which is a support service run by the Black Dog Institute for emergency workers and first responder volunteers. Surf Lifesaving members can access mental health resources, book in to see a psychologist or take a quick and easy mental health check up.

In the 2024/25 season there will be additional resources available through two new roles: a Club Peer supporter and Branch Peer supporter. The Club Peer supporter is a role that sits within Tama SLSC and is someone who can champion the wellbeing initiatives and point members in the right direction if they are looking for additional support. While, the Branch Peer supporter assists Duty Officers with scene management, conducts wellbeing checks post incidents and refers members to professional support services as required.

Of course, if you are already a member at Tamarama SLSC, the door is always open for you to contact me with any questions and I am always up for a coffee and chat. If you are thinking of joining, please do so knowing that we offer a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for our members.

See you on the beach!
