She's a lifesaver - Marin

Hi Team Tama,

We are into week 4 of our Tama Women profile series, and we’ve had some great feedback about it, thank you, and keep it coming! I’m editing this week (Zoe) and I met our next featured Tama legend when I went to the Bronze info night on a swelteringly hot summer’s evening back in 2020, (before La Nina kicked in). This week it’s all about Marin, who hails from Georgia in the US, she is small but can she swim! Marin is an absolute gun in the water, but so laid back you would never know until she leaves you in her wash, and comes out as if it was a walk in the park so to speak. Marin is also an invaluable part of the ‘She’s a Lifesaver’ campaign, a loyal club member, buddy, and great person to just hang out with. She is off overseas for several weeks soon, safe travels Marin, and thanks for being part of our campaign and our club, over to you...

Tell us a bit about yourself Marin :)

I was born in the US and moved to Australia from New Zealand about 6.5 years ago. I've always been keen to pick up and take on a new adventure.
I was a competitive swimmer in my younger years but I only got into ocean swimming once I moved to Sydney. There is nothing like the flow state you enter when being in the open water. You can be entirely focused on the present moment whilst also appreciating being a tiny person in the great ocean.

She's a lifesaver - Sandra

Hi Team Tama,

We hope you are all having a great week. Welcome to the third Tama Woman profile of our Shes’ a Lifesaver campaign.

This week, it is the turn of Sandra Fox, I think it is fair to say one of the most experienced lifesavers at our club. Sandra has been CTO and Vice President amongst so many roles and achievements and even has an award named after her but is one of the most humble people you will meet. Sandra was also acknowledged last year by SLSA for the 40th anniversary of women in SLS as one of the leading women in SLS, so this is exactly why we want to promote our fantastic women! Sandra currently is co-patrol captain of Patrol 11 with the lovely Jesse.

Please read and enjoy this week’s edition

Thanks for reading, Zoe

She's a lifesaver - Harriet

Hi Team Tama,

We hope you've enjoyed reading Zoe's profile, as the first of this new series where we point the spotlight on the amazing women of Tama.

And this week we are back introducing another incredible woman to our community, Harriet. Introduce Harriet? Who are we kidding, if you've been lucky enough to grab a ticket to our awards night last season, Harriet was our fabulous MC. She's a fierce Corona-Bronzie who joined the ranks of Patrol 2. On a quiet Saturday morning, she'll lead her patrol through a yoga sequence to ensure everyone's at their best whilst on patrol.

Please read, enjoy and share with your friends, family and just about anyone.

Over to you Harriet!

Tell us a bit about yourself: 3 words that best describe you. Creative, analytical, mermaid.

Why did you get in to Surf Life Saving?  How did you join Tama? My brother (Albert) and his boyfriend (Arnaud) were already patrol members and encouraged me after a breakup to do the bronze medallion and I took to it all like a fish to water (lol).
What are the best things about being part of the Surf Life Saving community? It's really nice to be part of a community whose people are all very different - from what they do, where they come from, to what they value. Inside of all this diversity, I have found a community that I trust, care a lot about and share a lot of joy with.

She's a lifesaver - Zoe

Hi Team Tama,

We are excited to introduce you to our new profiling series: She can, she will, she does. She's a lifesaver!

You got it, we will be pointing the spotlight on the amazing women of Tamarama in our Thursday edition. We shall also be making them famous on the Instaweb.

Our goals are:

  • To highlight the diversity in background, experience, age, and skills of the women of Tama;
  • To steer away from some of the stereotypes that can be associated with SLS and the women involved;
  • In the pursuit of continuing to forge stronger connections amongst all our members and our non-members, to promote women in lifesaving and always be recruiting.

This week we are starting with our current Vice President, and inspiration behind this initiative, Zoe Scott-King from Patrol 11. Please read, enjoy and share with your friends, family and just about anyone.

Over to you Zoe!

Tell us a bit about yourself: 3 words that best describe you. Quite short, quite chatty, think I'm funny and love drinking tea (not 3 words, yes I cheated)

Why did you get in to Surf Life Saving?  How did you join Tama? Ben Armitage recruited me as we are friends from working together previously. It all happened at the right time last year, despite the impact of Covid, being with the 'Corona/Best Bronzies' was a lifesaver in all meanings of the word, it turned a very turbulent year into an extraordinary year.

Education Pathways at Tamarama SLSC & SLS NSW

Got your Bronze Medallion? Looking to make progress in your Surf Life Saving (SLS) journey? There are so many pathways for higher education in SLS at Tamarama and NSW broadly. Here is an infographic made by our very own Chief Education Officer Michelle Cowan that explains the different options available:

Our Summer Look - 86 400 & Tamarama SLSC

I did a double take the other day when I noticed that the iconic custard yellow exterior of the Tamarama Surf Lifesaving Club is now sporting a new summery look. She now dons a beautiful shade of aqua, with polka dots of turquoise, sunshine and peach, colours which Julian Ashton put to good use in capturing the redolence of summer days spent at our unique beach.

The grand old dame also sports a few temporary tattoos. These are a cheeky take on Aussie slang for our distinctive banknote colours. The pink $5 note is known as a “prawn”, the $10 note is “a blue swimmer crab” and the red $20 note “a lobster”. “Pineapple” is what many call a $50 note, while a “frog” is slang for a $100 bill.

The makeover is all to drive awareness of a fundraiser in partnership with smartbank 86 400, which we hope will generate the final money needed to renovate the clubhouse next year.

86 400 has generously made a $25,000 donation that will go directly to Tamarama SLSC’s fundraising efforts. On top of that, every Aussie who signs up to 86 400 using the code ‘SMART10’ and makes a purchase will earn themselves $10, plus an additional $10 for Tamarama SLSC, which 86 400 will donate to the club’s redevelopment fund on their behalf.

The clubhouse has been around since 1906, and this final fundraising push will ensure a much-needed renovation that will set us up for a further 100 years, meaning we can continue to serve the community through life-saving patrols, education programs and community use of the upgraded clubhouse

Given the year we’ve all had, we can all look forward to some cheer and merriment, so if we can all get together and show support for this last fundraising push to get the work started, I will personally dress up in an unofficial Tamarama SLSC grouper (or merman) outfit at the new launch for a photo opportunity to thank you for your generosity.
