She's a lifesaver - Lauren

Happy New Year Team Tama!

We hope you had a great start to the year, we are back so be ready for some tremendous Tama women profiles coming your way!

Also don’t forget to hold the date - Sunday 13th March for our all-star women patrol in the afternoon plus our club social! We are starting 2022 with someone who has been at the club pretty much since she could crawl/walk! Meet the lovely Lauren from patrol 9. She has some wonderful things to say so please enjoy and say hi to her next time you’re on the beach

Over to you Lauren,

Tell us a bit about yourself: 3 words that best describe you: Hi, I’m Lauren! I’m short, smiley, and am easily bribed by chocolate

How did you get in Surf Life Saving? How did you join Tama? My older sister Sami started nippers at Tama when she was 4, and I was 1. I would join in some of the activities and watch them till I joined nippers at 4 years old! I’ve been at Tama ever since, through nippers, SRC and bronze and love the amazing patrol 9 with Derek. I’m 20 now, and Surf Life Saving has always been an important part of my life.

What are the best things about being part of the Surf Life Saving community? I think one of the best things about the SLS community, especially at Tama, is that everyone feels valued regardless of their level or experience. Every person is celebrated for their achievements, big and small, and supported in their SLS journey! There are also a million opportunities to keep learning and growing.

Tell us about what you do when not on the beach at Tama looking after people? I’m at uni at the moment, studying product design, and have an internship on the side. In my spare time, I love baking, craft, swimming, bushwalking, and anything in the sun!

Favourite place to go for food in Sydney? It would have to be the Tama café, but for very specific reasons. I can watch the waves, bring my dog Edie, and eat my favourite banana bread!

Ready to race for the YES campaign

What would be your advice to any woman thinking to give surf lifesaving a go? Just go for it!  Through surf lifesaving you learn first aid skills that will be forever useful, you’ll gain confidence in your ocean and fitness skills and be surrounded by like-minded people that are awesome to hang out with! There’s something for everyone, so give it a go.

What have you learned from your time at Tama? What has been something you learned that has surprised you? I have learned to gain confidence in myself, and not be scared of a challenge. I very much like staying within my comfort zone, but SLS taught me to be more flexible and feel capable of responding to any situation.

Lauren with the gang of Patrol 9
