Stakeholders

The following groups of people have some interest in the swim, or are effected by the hosting of a swim, at Tamarama

Waverley Council

Council is indirectly responsible for ensuring that any event that occurs in its jurisdiction is acceptable to the residents. They also provide insurance for the event and are major sponsors to the surf club. Council permission is required to host this event. Council has, in the past, been successfully sued for injuries sustained by beach-goers.

Goals

  • Keeping residents happy
  • Maintaining park groups and Tamarama surf club exterior
  • Supporting events that add value to the community
  • Ensuring safety on the beaches

Sponsors

Sponsors are people and organisations that have donated prizes and cash to the event (presumably in exchange for some level of advertising).

Goals

  • High Event Visibility
  • Getting value for money for donations
  • Preferential treatment for event

Lifeguards

The Lifeguards are professional emergency surf rescue specialists who are paid by the Waverley Council to help ensure the safety of the Waverley beaches. There are two lifeguards at Tamarama and council has indicated (initially at least) that they don't intend to put on extra staff for the event. Having said that the council Jetskis are available at a cost of $300 which gives two additional lifeguards on rescue craft, and Bronte is just around the corner.

Goals

  • Safety and enjoyment of all beach-goers
  • Maintaining council laws (no dogs, no smoking, etc...)

Tamarama Committee

The Tamarama Management Committee is responsible for the day to day running of Tamarama SLSC. Of particular note is the management committee will have to approve any expenses incurred by, and will want to be informed of the safety plan for, this swim.

Goals

  • Safety of all beach-goers
  • Happiness of club members
  • Ongoing economic sustainability of club
  • Care and maintenance of the club house and surrounds

Club Members

Members of Tamarama SLSC. While each member, has differing individual goals, they can be surmised as

Goals

  • Not have life overtaken by surf club business
  • Safety of beach-goers
  • Health and fitness
  • Ongoing wellbeing of Tamarama SLSC

Other Clubs

Other clubs will most likely be required to provide some degree of assistance to the swim, especially IRB crews. In the case of a landing at Bronte instead of at Tamarama due to dangerous conditions, then water safety personnel may also be required, as well as use of the beach.

Goals

  • Safety of all beach-goers
  • Happiness of their club members
  • Ongoing economic sustainability of their club
  • Care and maintenance of their club house and surrounds

Coastguard

The coastguard is technically responsible for water safety up to the high-tide mark, however this is a shared responsibility in practise. Provided their costs are reasonable, we intend to have the coast guard patrol the ocean-side periphery of the course

Goals

  • Safety of swimmers
  • Sharks?

Competitors

Obvious

Goals

  • Accurate results
  • Enjoyable swim
  • Obtain prizes/mementos of swim
  • Hydration and food before and after swim (especially after, fluid is a priority)
  • Avoiding sunburn
  • To be entertained
  • Value for money
  • To feel safe while swimming
  • Not have to worry about family members being bored or lost while swimming
  • Socialise/compete with mates and other swimmers
  • Convenient transport to and from event

Spectators

Spectators are generally friends and family of competitors, however these events are increasingly attracting people who simply enjoy the spectacle. Given the terrain, we are promoting this swim as a good spectator swim, and in good weather the number of spectators can eclipse the number of competitors.

Goals

  • Seeing favorite swimmer(s) start and finish
  • Buying swim-specific merchandise
  • Avoiding sunburn
  • Food/drink
  • Convenient transport to and from event (although possibly more willing to walk than competitors)
  • Photograph opportunities

Residents

Residents of Tamarama are particularly vocal in their complaints both against promotion and use of the beach and surrounding park-lands. Having said that, Sculpture by the Sea has set the precedent and is a far larger inconvenience than this event will be. Some residents will also be competitors

Goals

  • Privacy
  • Ensuring as few people go to Tamarama as possible
  • Maintaining property prices
  • Accessible on-street parking
  • Entertainment
  • Avoiding pollution (including noise pollution)

Visitors and Passers-by

Given the popularity of the coastal walk from Bondi to Bronte, there is a substantial amount of foot traffic that passes the beach every day regardless of any events that might be running. There is also a certain amount of vehicle traffic, as well as non-competitor swimmers and subbathers.

Goals

  • To be able to get where they are going
  • Food/drink
  • To be able to enjoy the beach and parkland area in safety
  • Parking

Sydney Branch of SLSA

We will be asking Sydney Branch to supply a jetski for the event. Beyond that branch should have minimal involvement

Goals

  • Water safety

Local Surfers

Local surfers will be disrupted by this event as the beach will be closed to fiberglass boards for the duraction

Goals

  • Surfing
