Hi Bill and members of the renovation committee,
First I would like to thank you all for putting all this together; I have to say it fills me with lots of excitement to see that in a near future we will have a great club house.
Now I only have three questions regarding the plans:
• Where is the patrol room? Are we having one?
• Where are we going to store life saving gear like rescue boards, tubes, fins, Skis, oxygen tanks, first aid materials?
• Where do the members get to exercise and keep fit? In other words, where did the Gym go?
Please excuse my limited knowledge in blueprint reading if this has been planned already.
Cheers and thanks again

Hi Andres, Bill and all members,
The patrol room is still there in the same place, labeled "viewing".
Some of the life saving gear (1 sunshade and 12 boards) will be located in the new duck shed. This will improve OHS (and reduce board damage) as we will no longer have to negotiate the stairs.
However there's still nowhere to store the club's other rescue boards, race boards, race skis, surf boats, gear trailer, competition tent, members' surf boards etc. And no gym. Is this an oversight or do we simply not have room to support competitors and people who actually want to develop the skills and fitness to rescue people?
I'm guessing the inclusion of both a community meeting room and a community hall is a requirement for funding, but it looks like we're selling out.
Regards, Simon

Dear All
These observations/suggestion/comments are in no priority order
1. I do not believe it advisable to use the word Community with respect the meeting room and hall. This gives the impression that it is not part of tama slsc and thus might end up, especially after the current round of council elections, with the club not having authority to hire out the space and perhaps, like some clubs on the north shore, need to make application to council to use for club purposes
2. Please explain why there is no gymnasium or equivalent facility?
3. From the history of the club I have concluded that the surf side wall is not a heritage one. That being the case, I find it extremely disappointing that we have tripled/quadrupled the upstairs room capacity only to have the same viewing space re looking at the surf (from said Reef lounge room) as it currently stands
4. The open breeze way with BBQ is wasted; I am sure members would wish to BBQ upstairs nearer to where they rest and refresh and observe surf?
5. I would suggest the following as alternatives: remove the ocean side wall, leave the front art deco wall; extend the top floor over the side walkway to the ocean and all the way to the house side boundary after lowering the club room ceiling height; resident members room to remain as per plan; where the current ocean side wall is make that the multi glass door windows leading out to extended balcony so that the current downstairs area is reproduced upstairs and extended from the reef lounge with the additional space behind and around the resident members room becoming open plan BBQ area also accessed by multi glass door windows suggest these be a multi paneled folding/sliding door – like the one at Scots’ blackwatch café; the open air breeze way then becomes a covered over outside club room area which could double for other uses
6. I do not think the egress from the toilet area via new excavation is worth the effort, suggest a need to find alternatives to solve this dual egress need for emergency purposes; also, I do not think the ‘Community Meeting Room’ as it stands will be as easy to construct due to the fact that there is a sandstone wall on one side and is on concrete floor which has raised the floor height so I question the end height v making a usable room space especially without air-conditioning
7. Storage space is also a must for competition gear unless council will agree to provision of beach level storage, for once ceiling is slabbed and lowered we will not have the capacity to hang from it as it will present an OH&S issue.
8. I think the space diagrammed for the upstairs room over the club room will be too small as it stands, to that end suggest a readable dimension attachment is necessary too
The concepts behind what has been presented to date are a wonderful beginning and I believe will ultimately provide the best premises in Oz for any sls club. Let us not forget that if we do not take advantage of what we have as a locational asset this time we are unlikely to see our wishes come to fruition in our life time
Cheers from

From JABBA and Marty
Billy,
Next and of less importance at this time but Jabba is right those designs look like veranda bar in Martin Place not a surf club !!!
No gym, No ski storage , No racing Boards it looks like Waverly bowling club with a shower.
I am very disappointed , if that is the best then get rid of him and start again.
Paul Martin
No offence mate but that is weak...
It's a surf club... I'd rather get no money & keep the club the way it is
rather than sell out to the council...
What about the members wants/needs?
No gym?
Why 2 courtyards?
Community Hall? What happened to Main Hall?
View from upstairs balcony? Why keep the existing wall?
Storage for surfboats/racing boards/skis etc?
6
IRB motors - why?

Would like to thank the Building Committee for their time so far as well as going through this difficult stage.
From a Lifesaving view, and we are a Lifesaving Club, here are some key points missed.
1) No plan for Club redevelopment should be shown without inclusions of Lifesaving and Competition equipment. If the Club is transferring these items to the proposed Tamarama Park Plan Kiosk then those plans should be included with these plans before we progress.
2)The Hall is a Club Hall and any Meetings Rooms etc be tittles Club Meeting Rooms etc.
3)The Patrol Room must exist in its present site and extended laterally increasing its size.. it is too small at present. A side door can exist were the presents steps are and away from the wind.
4)We require active people to do rescues. A Gym is vital to Members to keep fit and retain memberships. We should improve our Gym.
5)Competition is vital to a strong Club. As well as storage for equipment they require a gym... the boat rowers for example should have in the gym access to 4 rowing machines.
6)Which area have the Building Committee designated as the Training area for courses such as BM?
Other notes:
On a structural view, if space is tight let us loose the courtyard. Members have upstairs balcony anyway so let us place the BBQ there.
Income through Hall hire is important but let us not loose sight of our role in Surf Lifesaving. However, do we have refrigeration (such as a coolroom) facilities for beer, food storage etc?
There is no storage for surfing boards or bodyboards. They are a segment of the community we can tap into to provide capable people and charge earning an income.
The plans do not mention many of material to be used which is important because of the hostile environment the Club suffers from.
Great to see an office at a better location. Hopefully with its usage (there is a lot of paperwork in a Surf Club) we will also derive a better income from merchandise sales (Col did an excellent job last season).
Stoked to see upstairs... but can we keep the name "Reef Lounge"... its so, Tama.... and can it be bigger??
In summary, you have made the first step. Please understand it is more important we create the correct outcome and should this take time so be it. A new Club has to achieve the goals of giving Members better facilities, attract new Members and increasing our present numbers and earn an income to pay for the renovations and take us into the future financially. It is no mean feat.

The overall building design, within its current envelope, and opening it up to cross-flow ventilation and lots of natural light, looks excellent. Personally I like the courtyard, if the space is not required to fulfill other functions - why not two convivial areas if we can afford it?
Other practical considerations are below:
1. Gym is a must, both for encouraging fitness programs of current members and also seen as 'added value' for new prospects.
2. Surf equipment and gear storage should have overall plan attached, to account for kiosk & lifeguard tower developments, with allowance for other storage needs in the club house.
3. Why so many toilets (six for girls!)? Why not a smaller number of unisex toilets adjacent to, but not inside, change rooms?
4. Agree with Capt Rex that patrol room is too small and needs some expansion to adequately cope with even small number of patrollers.
5. Designated 'community meeting room' seems unnecessay, particularly in that prime accessible corner of the Club; also agree that we should insist on description of 'Club' facilities, rather than 'community', to avoid any 'ownership' issues in the future.
6. Handicap access to upper level via lift seems expensive solution - is that really a legal requirement?
6. Finally, and most importantly, we need to see a capital finance & budget program, which will meet the objective of possible progressive building in stages - in other words, 'module' costings that can be met by projected capital raisings from all sources, and associated time-line.
Thanks to everyone involved for a great start to the project, and hope these comments will help.
