Annual Proficiency

Proficiency or skills maintenance

- attend a confirmed proficiency date listed below (before 31 December 2019)

- perform the skills required by the assessor

- sign off your attendance record with the assessor

Please also note that you will need to complete the online "Skills Maintenance" component that can be found in the members portal in e-learning.

NOTE: You must attend a date before 31 December - come along early to avoid disappointment!

If I did my bronze last year, do I have to do this?

If you completed your bronze medallion last season (either in December 2016 or April 2018) you MUST complete your proficiency for this season. You will be the most recently qualified guru, so come along and show off your sweet skills!

If I cant make any of these dates, what do I do?

It's important to us that you can patrol! So please, let us know by emailing [email protected] and we'll make an alternative arrangement with you.

I haven't done my proficiency for a few years, what do I need to do?

If a member remains non-proficient in any award for a period of 3 continuous years or more, then they are required to go through SLSNSW’s in-depth proficiency process.

Please email [email protected] and we'll work with you to ensure this is smooth.

What does proficiency involve?

Your bronze proficiency is like a mini bronze. You will need to complete the following

- 4 signals

- radio demonstration

- resus (one person DRSABCD, two person, team resus with o2 and defib)

- a 200m Run Swim Run in under 8 minutes

- A board or tube rescue

The assessment will consist of both practical and theory testing all of the above. It is designed to bring you up to speed for the season so that you, and the public, feel confident and safe!

Why do I have to do this?

Skills maintenance checks are necessary to:

- Ensure ongoing competency of members in their area of training and activities

- Maintain the standards of knowledge and expertise of surf lifesavers

- Satisfy legal and statutory requirements

- Reinforce and maintain our service commitment to the bathing and beach going community

What should I bring?

You must be wearing a patrol cap during the water activities.

Please also bring towels, swimmers, sun protection and warm clothes.

It would be helpful if you could also bring your receipt for membership fees to help with admin.

Can I do it at another club?

It is best to do your proficiency at the club where you patrol the most. If you would like to complete your skills maintenance at a club where you do not patrol, Tamarama will need to apply on your behalf to that club. Please email [email protected] with the date, time and club you would like to attend.

I have other awards, what do I need to do for these?

Please let your assessor on the day know if you have your ARTC, as we will also test your skills in this area.

If you have your IRB Crew or Drivers there will be a separate date emailed to you.

All other awards do not require an annual proficiency.
